Foresight Group is investing in the Hull business which was launched almost 60years ago
A Hull engineering group is set to expand further outside its Humber heartland after sealing investment from a leading Yorkshire private equity company. Alan Wood & Partners was launched by founder Alan Wood in a modest rented room in Hull city centre in 1968.
Since then, the firm has grown to become a leading consultancy in civil and structural engineering, employing 114 people at the last count in filed company accounts. It also now brings in turnover of more than £11m and operating profits of more than £2.3m from its seven regional offices, in Hull, York, Leeds, Lincoln, Scarborough, Sheffield, and Stockton-on-Tees – and it has big ambitions for the future.
The company has played a key role in major construction and infrastructure projects across the region and beyond, helping to shape the built environment. Over the years it has been involved in many high profile projects, including the redevelopment of Seaview Colonnade in Sutton-on-Sea, the refurbishment of South Cliff Gardens in Scarborough, and work at Hilderthorpe retail park development in Bridlington.
Now leading regional private equity and real assets manager Foresight has announced an investment into Alan Wood & Partners. Foresight has a strong track record of backing growing regional businesses and continues to support job creation, regional growth and sustainable infrastructure.

The level of investment hasn’t been disclosed, but Alan Wood & Partners said the money will support its next phase of growth by expanding its footprint across the UK. Expansion includes a recently opened office in Teesside, and it also aims to boost its services in high growth areas such as infrastructure, modern methods of construction and renewable energy.
It will also use the investment to ramp up its digital engineering capabilities, and develop talent across its offices.
Mark Coates, managing director of Alan Wood & Partners, said: “We are incredibly proud of the reputation Alan Wood & Partners has built over nearly six decades, and we see significant opportunity ahead as the demand for high quality engineering and consultancy services continues to grow. Partnering with Foresight gives us the strategic support and investment we need to accelerate our plans, strengthen our technical capabilities and expand our presence across the country.
“We’re excited about what this partnership enables for our people, our clients, and the communities we serve.”
Tavia Sparks, director at Foresight Group, added: “Alan Wood & Partners is exactly the type of high-quality, regional business we are committed to supporting. With a strong heritage, a skilled and motivated team, and a clear growth trajectory, the company is well-placed to capture increasing demand for resilient infrastructure, sustainable design, and modern construction solutions.
“We look forward to working closely with the management team as the business enters its next growth chapter.”
