CONSTRUCTION of new social housing in Glasgow has begun in a bid to meet the rising demand for affordable homes in the city.
The family-owned Glasgow-based housebuilder AS Homes has officially begun construction of 19 new homes for social rent in Arden in the south-west of the city.
The £4.3 million development is being delivered in partnership with Glen Oaks Housing Association, along with £2.8m grant funding from the Scottish Government through Glasgow City Council, with the remainder from private finance.
Those behind the development say the new homes will help address the growing demand for high-quality affordable housing within the community.

Paul Kelly, managing director of AS Homes, said the beginning of construction is an “important milestone” in the firm’s commitment to deliver affordable homes.
“We are proud to be delivering high-quality, energy-efficient homes that will make a real difference to families in Arden,” he said.
“There is significant demand for affordable housing across Glasgow, and we are committed to supporting the creation of sustainable communities through projects such as this.”
The new homes will be a mix of four-bedroom end terrace properties alongside two- and three-bedroom terraced villas, designed to “meet the needs of family life”.

Developers said the new homes will be built to modern standards, and will incorporate a range of sustainability features, including energy-efficient building fabric, enhanced insulation, air-source heating systems and water conservation measures.
These features will help to reduce environmental impact while lowering household energy costs for residents.
The homes are expected to be completed in April 2027, with the final residents moving in shortly thereafter.
The development will also include open spaces, which those behind the project said will create “strong physical and social connections” between the new development and the existing community.

Landscape proposals aim to enhance local biodiversity, while ensuring that both new and existing residents benefit from an “integrated, attractive and environmentally responsible neighbourhood”.
Nicola Logan, CEO of Glen Oaks Housing Association, added: “It’s fantastic to see work begin on this next phase of regeneration in Arden to provide new homes and further strengthen the community.
“We look forward to welcoming new residents once the development is complete.”
