Residents in Silverdale and across the Morecambe Bay area described ‘a big thud’ and ‘a burst of noise’ after a 2.2-magnitude tremor struck on Saturday night

A Lancashire village has been shaken by a second earthquake in under a month, with locals describing “one hell of a bang”. The British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed a 2.2-magnitude earthquake hit Silverdale at 9.35pm on Saturday night (June 6).
People in the vicinity and as far afield as Grange-over-Sands and Bolton-le-Sands reported “a big thud” and “a burst of noise” that felt like “a distant explosion”.
The same location experienced a 2.3-magnitude earthquake on May 13 and also a considerably smaller 0.4-magnitude earthquake on April 12. Several other earthquakes have also taken place in the vicinity since the end of 2025, including two in December and further tremors in February and March this year, reports Lancs Live.
Residents took to social media last night after experiencing the earthquake. Jay Stride posted: “Another earthquake just happened?”

Commenting on social media, James Black wrote: “One hell of a bang that” and Neil Wood said: “It was very loud here and whole tower shook.”
Jane Caldwell said: “I thought so too! Thought someone had slammed a door and it shook the sofa!!” while Victoria Kaye Holt posted: “My house just shook.”
Heather Rowena Brocklebank stated: “Felt that in Arnside” whereas Judith Whitmarsh said: “Felt that in Grange too.”
Sarah Heathcote observed: “We must be earthquake centre of UK!”
