A baby has died following an incident at a home in south Manchester. A major emergency services response was reported on Platt Lane in Fallowfield on Thursday morning (May 7).
The air ambulance was spotted touching down in the vicinity. Local residents reported witnessing ambulances and police vehicles at the scene, near the junction with Yew Tree Road.
One person said she witnessed a paramedic rushing from a property carrying a baby. “It was terrifying,” she said. “Very scary.” Another resident said: “There was a lot of police and two ambulances. I heard one of them mention a child.”, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Detective officers and forensic crime scene investigation (CSI) specialists were observed as an inquiry commenced.
“I didn’t see or hear anything until a police officer knocked on my door,” a neighbour told the Manchester Evening News.
“There was one in uniform and one in plain clothes. The one in plain clothes just said there had been an incident and asked if I’d heard anything. He didn’t say any more.”
The Manchester Evening News understands a baby died at the scene. It remains unclear whether the child’s death is being treated as suspicious.
The North West Ambulance Service confirmed paramedics attended an incident at a private address, but declined to give further details.
It comes after a teacher, under police questioning regarding the sudden death of his adopted baby, denied any abuse or sexual interest in the child, a court has been told.
Jamie Varley, 37, assured officers “he has not been abused” in a video presented to jurors at Preston Crown Court, which depicted the police interview following his arrest after the death of 13-month-old Preston Davey. In the footage, Varley is probed about worrying injuries and videos he had taken of the child.
The defendant, who was a high school teacher at the time, stands accused of the murder of the child, while his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, is charged with allowing the child’s death, with both facing accusations of sexual abuse.
During the four months Preston was under their adoption at their home in Blackpool, it is alleged he was regularly mistreated, had indecent images and videos taken of him, was sexually abused and physically assaulted.
Varley was interrogated by police about the numerous bruises or injuries on the child’s body, including on both arms, his legs, back, throat and bottom and 24 bruises to his head, including behind his ear.
