The proposed Hebburn housing development would also include affordable homes, a new sports facility, wildlife habitats and more, pending South Tyneside Council approval
Further details have emerged on an ambitious scheme set to bring new homes and sporting facilities to Hebburn. Bellway Homes is seeking planning permission to construct 115 properties on land at Victoria Road West, alongside “a playing pitch and associated infrastructure.”
The site sits between existing residential developments, farmland and schools, with planning documents submitted to the council describing it as “well connected to a road network, with convenient links to the Felling Bypass (A184) and Leam Lane (A194)”.
Gateshead-based Bellway North East said the housing proposals for the land, which was formerly home to South Tyneside College’s Hebburn campus over a decade ago, would bring real benefits to the town.
Part of the former college site already features residential development, while the second parcel of land currently lies vacant, having previously served as the college’s playing fields.
Developers said that proposals for the 13-acre site would help address local housing demand, while also delivering a new sports facility, wildlife habitats and more.
The proposed mix of properties comprises 31 two-bedroom homes, 71 three-bedroom homes and 13 four-bedroom homes.
Bellway confirmed the development would include four affordable rental properties and 10 homes available at discounted market value, along with 292 parking spaces.
Stuart Morgan, land director for Bellway North East, said the plans would “create a sustainable new neighbourhood” and support local jobs. He said: “This development would help to meet demand for new private and affordable homes in South Tyneside while opening up a new sports facility for the local community to use.
“The homes would be energy efficient, featuring solar panels to provide free low-carbon electricity to residents as well as electric vehicle charging points. There would also be landscaped areas, new wildlife habitats and trees planted within the development.
“The site is in a well-connected location, with schools, shops and leisure facilities nearby, good road links and convenient access to the Metro station at Pelaw.”
The housing boss went on to say: “Bellway has a strong track record for building high-quality homes across the North East.
“This site in Hebburn provides an opportunity to create a sustainable new neighbourhood which would provide the housing the area needs while supporting employment for people in the area.”
The planning application for 115 homes was formally submitted to the council earlier this month, following a period of community consultation.
A ruling from South Tyneside Council is anticipated after a formal consultation process has been completed. For further details, visit the council’s planning portal website and search for reference 260178.
