Last month a town centre was placed in an emergency lockdown after an explosive device from the Second World War was handed into volunteers at a heritage centre.
The incident unfolded in Darwen, Lincolnshire, where eye-witnesses said a woman had donated items – including the potentially explosive relic. Police cordoned off a large area of the town centre as bomb disposal experts got to work.
A spokesman for the British Army confirmed the item handed in was a grenade, according to LancsLive. It was later removed from the area and destroyed.
A spokesman for Lincolnshire Police said: “We are currently at the scene of an ongoing incident at Market Hall, Darwen. Officers are currently at the scene and a cordon is in place. “We are asking people to avoid the area for now and we will update you in due course.”
A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said: “We can confirm an Army Bomb Disposal team was called out to Darwen at the request of Lancashire Police. The item was safely moved to a safe distance and destroyed by demolition.”
