BRITAIN’s first AI-powered town will be lined up before the next election, Housing Secretary Steve Reed has said.
He told The Sun he wanted roads, shops and even care homes run seamlessly on the tech.
Labour wants to build 12 towns in England as well as completing 1.5million new homes by the end of this parliament.
Mr Reed said it would be a push but was determined to get it done.
He added: “We’ve got an ageing population – what would a new town look like that would make it better and easier to age well?
“What would a modern garden city look like where you have automated infrastructure?
“Could you have your own device that would give you information about what’s going on?
“The only limit is the creativity of the people that live there.”
It comes as mayors outside London are urged to set out plans to speed up social housing, backed by £7billion of funding.
Local leaders will get more freedom to specify the homes their areas need and prioritise them for construction.
The Housing Secretary said: “People who want a council home are sometimes stuck on the list for 10 or 20 years.
“We need to start cutting those waiting lists down and give some people a place a decent home where they know they’re going to be secure for years to come and where they can afford to live.”
