UK households without a driveway will be able to access cheaper energy rates with a 2p per mile plan when the law is put in place
Fresh legislation unveiled this week impacts every household lacking driveways throughout the UK. Rule changes for home EV charging will make the process ‘simpler and more affordable’ for tenants and those without private driveways, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The updated legislation will require leaseholders to fit EV charging points in covered parking areas. It will also eliminate planning permission requirements for pavement charging installations, which ministers claim will save motorists £250 in application costs, whilst enabling EV drivers to benefit from cheaper, standard domestic energy rates.
These modifications will grant additional drivers access to typical household electricity tariffs rather than forcing them to rely on costlier public charging facilities, reports the Express. Using an affordable EV tariff at home would reduce running costs to 2p per mile, or ‘the equivalent of London to Birmingham for £2.50’, according to the Department for Transport.
Significant public charger expansion has occurred beyond London, with device installations outside the capital rising by 24.3%, compared to 21.7% within it. Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, said: “Wherever you park your car, we’re making it fairer, easier, and cheaper to make the switch to electric.
“These reforms will improve infrastructure for the EV revolution, increase charge points across the country and open up affordable home charging to thousands more households. It’s good news for drivers and a big boost for the growing British EV industry – cutting costs and supporting jobs to deliver our Plan for Change.”
