A housebuilder has donated ‘hedgehog homes‘ to a Bury primary school.
Summerseat Methodist Primary School, located near Barratt Homes’ Waldmers Wood development, received the donation in support of Hedgehog Awareness Week, which ran from May 3 to 9.
The initiative aims to teach pupils about wildlife conservation and the actions people can take to protect wild creatures.

Rhys Nicholson, managing director at Barratt Homes Manchester, said: “We are proud to support Hedgehog Awareness Week and help teach students about the dangers facing British wildlife, alongside the part that everyone can play in keeping the countryside buzzing with life.
“We have installed hedgehog highways across our developments in the North West and on Waldmers Wood specifically, we have implemented a biodiversity area, planted sapling hedgerows and wildflower meadows.
“We hope the students of Summerseat Methodist Primary School enjoy their new hedgehog homes and learn all they can about hedgehogs’ place in the world around them.”

As reported by Lancashire Wildlife Trust, the Western European hedgehog had been upgraded from ‘Least Concern’ to ‘Near Threatened’ in 2024.
This was the result of a decline of up to 30 per cent of hedgehog numbers in areas since the turn of the century.
A spokesperson for the housebuilder said in a statement: “Barratt Homes’ contribution to the school will encourage the pupils to look after the hedgehogs on the doorstep while learning more about wildlife.”
