Work on a new housing development in Neath Port Talbot has begun this month, under local housing association Tai Tarian.
The project based in Cwmavon, Port Talbot, will see the demolition of 30 post-war, prefabricated bungalows currently based on land at Heol Crwys, to make way for 43 new homes.
The work will be carried out by social housing provider Tai Tarian, with local construction firm CJ Construction in place to lead the development, on a site that was previously said to “detract somewhat from the character and appearance of the area”, with properties in varying states of disrepair.

The new development will consist of a mix of one and two-bedroom bungalows and one-bedroom apartments, featuring solar panels and battery storage with air source heat pumps for heating and hot water.
A report read: “The project will see the demolition of 30 post-war prefabricated bungalows, which have surpassed their intended lifespan, to make way for 43 energy efficient homes. Like Tai Tarian’s flagship County Flats development in Sandfields, the project sees some of their existing land being maximised to make way for an additional 13 homes.”
It added: “The project has been made possible thanks to the help of the Welsh Government’s Social Housing Grant and Land and Buildings Development Fund and continued support from Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council.”
Head of development Andrew Hall said: “It became increasingly clear that our homes at Heol Crwys were no longer fit for purpose, which provided the opportunity to invest and utilise the existing area to provide our tenants with energy efficient, modern homes that better meet their needs and that they can be proud of.”
The project is now expected to be completed by the end of 2027, and will feature alongside a number of other developments Tai Tarian is working on in the borough. These include 18 apartments planned for Port Talbot town centre on the site of the former Eagle House building, and 52 new homes at Eaglesbush, Neath.
