UK Manufacturing Automation Lag: Robotic Investment Success Story vs. National Decline – News and Statistics

According to a report from Yahoo Finance, a sheet metal factory in Kent known as Contracts Engineering installed a robotic welder five years ago at a significant cost. The company has since installed a second unit and has recouped its initial investment multiple times over, seeing its pre-tax profits quadruple. The robotic systems have enabled the firm to outperform international competitors and expand its business to the point of hiring two additional human welders to work with the machines.

However, this company’s approach is currently uncommon in the United Kingdom. A combination of poor business investment, a substantial skills shortage, high energy costs, and risk aversion has resulted in the UK lagging far behind other nations in manufacturing automation. Performance is declining relative to other countries, posing a threat to factories that fail to catch up.

Industry data indicates South Korea has 1,012 industrial robots for every 10,000 manufacturing workers. The comparable figure for the UK is approximately 111, which is roughly one-tenth of South Korea’s density. This UK number is about half the European Union average of 208 and roughly a quarter of Germany’s figure of 415. Further analysis suggests British manufacturing workers have access to 47 percent less machinery, tools, and technology than their counterparts in similar economies.

This technological disadvantage is affecting the UK’s global industrial position. Between 2005 and 2023, the country fell from 10th to 19th place on a competitive industrial performance index that measures a nation’s ability to produce and export manufactured goods. The UK’s share of global manufacturing dropped from 3.1 percent in 2000 to 1.9 percent in 2022, while its share of exports fell from 3.7 percent to 1.5 percent over the same period.

Industry estimates suggest that if British manufacturers were to match the technological advancements of global competitors, it could add the equivalent of an extra 150 billion pounds to the UK economy by 2035, representing a five percent increase. The chief executive of the group that owns Contracts Engineering states that automation is increasingly essential for UK manufacturers to compete with overseas companies, noting that the speed of adoption abroad is high and the UK needs to adopt automation more quickly and on a larger scale. A policy head at an industry body adds that Britain is missing out on several core elements of modern manufacturing that are now standard in leading industrial economies.
