Blackpool & The Fylde College (B&FC) has been selected as one of five Defence Technical Excellence Colleges (DTECs) in England.

Chris Webb, MP for Blackpool South, said: “This investment is a huge vote of confidence in Blackpool and in the talent of our young people.
“Becoming a Defence Technical Excellence College puts Blackpool & The Fylde College at the heart of the UK’s future defence workforce.
“It’s a massive opportunity for local people to gain the skills they need for well-paid, high-quality jobs, while strengthening our local economy and supporting national security.
“I’m proud to see Blackpool leading the way.”

Five selected colleges will share £50 million of Government funding. The programme supports a commitment made under the Defence Industrial Strategy.
DTECs will deliver technical training for students aged 16 and over, equipping them for skilled careers in defence.
B&FC is the only DTEC in the North West of England as the college was chosen for its expertise in areas including combat air, nuclear programmes, drones, and cyber.
It also has strong ties with defence employers in the region.

Luke Pollard, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, said: “Labour is making defence an engine for growth, and critical to that is ensuring we have a pipeline of skilled workers for the good, unionised jobs in the sector.
“We are backing young people across England today with a £50 million investment in Defence Technical Excellence Colleges, delivering on the promises made in the Defence Industrial Strategy.
“This is the Labour Government delivering for the country and delivering for defence.”
This marks the second major investment by the Ministry of Defence in Blackpool, following the announcement of 1,000 new MoD jobs in the town and a new town-centre office development.
The investment is part of the Government’s larger defence spending plans.
It has committed to the largest sustained increase in defence spending since the end of the Cold War.
A total of £270 billion is set to be invested over this parliamentary term.
