The UK Government is investing £3bn with a view to create around 50,000 specialist places in mainstream schools for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
A further £200m will be used for SEND training for educators.
In a social media post, Labour MP for Barrow and Furness Michelle Scrogham said: “I have been meeting regularly with parents, teachers and others involved in the SEND system in schools and last year sent a report to Ministers sharing local suggestions for fixing the broken system.
“One of the key points I raised with Ministers was the importance of improved training for all school staff.
“It is therefore great news that, as one part of the response to the current crisis, the Government has listened to these views and has announced investment of £200m in training.
“This will give teachers and school staff the skills and confidence needed to recognise and support children with SEND.
“This is alongside the £3bn investment to create new specialist places in mainstream schools, so we can build an education system designed to be inclusive to all children.
“There is still a long way to go in fixing SEND, with measures to be announced in the upcoming White Paper, but this is a positive step forward and very much something that the parents and teachers I have spoken to have been asking for.”
