Spitbank sea Fort, a granite island, stands in the waters of the Solent about a mile south of Portsmouth Harbour. The Fort is central for access to the whole of the South Cost of Hampshire and Dorset and The Isle of Wight is about three miles to the southeast. All easily accessible by your own boat.
This is one of three forts designed in the 1860’s to defend Portsmouth from naval attack by French ironclad warships. Its circular construction of mainly Granite, brick and stone and had its upper walls lined with thick armour plating, built to withstand high explosive rounds. The fort has therefore stood the test of time and sits in an utterly unique position in shallow water in front of the mouth to Portsmouth Harbour.
