A COUPLE have revealed that they decided to rent out their house and move into the garage, because they could no longer afford the mortgage.
Bryan and Jen Danger got rid of most of their belongings and moved into a campervan for a three year road trip.
Whilst they were gone, they rented the house out to another family, but when they came back they realised that they no longer had enough belongings to fill the house, and also didn’t have the cash to pay the mortgage.
Therefore, they made the decision to move into their garage, and continue renting out their house.
Speaking to HouzzTV, Bryan said that he was at first worried that the neighbours would think they were crazy, but said that they all love the space.
The couple’s garage has an industrial feel, as they made everything by hand.
Bryan taught himself to weld and made furniture for the garage, such as chairs and tables.
The couple wanted everything in the garage to have dual use, so created a breakfast bar that pulls out into a dining room table.
They also have stairs which double up as storage cupboards.
The family that rent the house pay the mortgage, so Bryan and Jen live in the garage rent and mortgage free.
The couple now have a business helping other people to create their own tiny homes.
Jen described her garage home as a “beautiful zen sanctuary”.
“It’s cheap living too!”, she added.
Social media users have showered the couple and their garage home in praise.
Commenting under a YouTube video of the garage, one person said: “I love this! The message especially.
“Downsize, do what you love. The space is perfect! The size, the aesthetic! Amazing!”
A second person said: “I don’t normally care for the industrial aesthetic, but this tiny home is just stunning!
Tiny Homes FAQs
The tiny house movement began in the USA before gaining popularity in the UK.
What is a tiny home?
Tiny houses are small, fully-equipped living spaces designed to lead a more sustainable, off-grid lifestyle. Although they vary in size and shape, tiny homes tend to be between 15 and 50 square metres in capacity, made of sustainable materials and are easier — and cheaper — to maintain than traditional brick homes.
Are tiny homes legal in the UK?
As long as the tiny house doesn’t exceed 19.8m x 6.7m in size, it is defined as a caravan in UK law. Therefore, tiny houses are classed as legal additional living space.
Can you get a mortgage for a tiny home?
The small size and relatively low cost of tiny houses means they’re not generally considered eligible for a mortgage. However, there are plenty of options to take out a loan to fund your dreams of the perfect, moveable home.
“In fact, it seems incredibly spacious, and not tiny at all.”
A third person said: “This whole video made me smile!! What a great couple and great home.”
A fourth added: “This absolutely is one the best tiny homes I ever have seen!”
