Tom Pitman launched his own company, TGP Mortgage & Insurance, in August 2024.
After working within the field for seven years, he chose to make the step to become self employed.
The 29-year-old said: “I was going to buy into a business but I really wanted to do my own thing.
“I could work from home and be a one-man band or set up more of a business and build that way.
“I didn’t think I could work from home everyday, so got some office space in Wrexham.
“Going solo, my biggest fear was losing clients but people have followed me across and I continue to get referrals.”
Setting up in the Regent building in the city, Tom took on Amy Roberts in January 2025, covering administration and acting as client account manager.
Tom added: “Now there were two of us, I was looking for bigger office space that was more prominent in Wrexham.
“Not long after I took on another mortgage adviser, Wendy Deacon, who I’d worked with previously.
“Then we found the office space were in now on Chester Street.”
While Tom would love to create a known brand, he’s happy to grow his business at a “slow and steady” pace, creating a strong foundation.
Wrexham AFC season ticket holder Tom added: “It’s all about building trust and creating a reputation, there’s been a lot of word of mouth recommendations.
“With the rising feelgood factor in the city, I’m seeing a lot more people staying in Wrexham now, rather than move away.”
Setting up his own business has been hard work but Tom has no regrets.
He said: “Going solo you’re wearing a lot of hats. And there are lots of costs involved and things to consider. But it’s 100% worth it.
“It’s given me a bit more freedom. It’s nice to see something grow and you’re in control of that, and being able to grow my own team.”
