Nearly two thirds (60%) of borrowers said they could not manage the homebuying or remortgage process without a broker, marking the third consecutive quarter with similar results, according to data from Santander.
Its Broker Perception Barometer found that 84% of mortgage customers said brokers gave them a sense of security, and 73% said brokers gave them greater confidence in their financial decisions.
71% said brokers are more important than ever.
Most borrowers (79%) reported saving money by working with a broker, with average monthly payments reduced by £136, up 8% since the first wave of the survey.
When asked who they would turn to first for mortgage support, 29% said their broker, compared to 8% who would use social media and 5% who would use artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
65% believe brokers are supporting clients well and 70% said they have a lot of respect for brokers dealing with the current market.
Football fever has not distracted homeowners from relying on brokers.
Most respondents (70%) said they would expect their broker to contact them during a match if mortgage advice was needed, and 27% said they would rather focus on financial matters than football.
However, 41% would consider delaying mortgage decisions until after the summer tournament.
42% said they would find football-themed emails from their broker engaging.
Graham Sellar, head of intermediary channels for Santander UK, said: “With football fever flooding the nation and many late nights ahead, the demands on brokers continue to be high – late night or otherwise!
“The reassurance and expertise that brokers provide remains, which is why we are committed to giving a minimum of 24 hours’ notice on product withdrawals, easing some of the pressure on brokers and giving them more time to reach out to their clients.”
