Forget the Amazon. This cliff-hugging home in the south-west of England is surrounded by a temperate rainforest overlooking the sea.
One of the most impressive listings currently on the market in Devon is a coastal compound that goes by the name Rockton. Asking £2.5 million (or about $3.2 million), the former coach house includes an adjoining, self-contained residence right next door that’s dubbed Rockton Mews. The stately spread was originally built in the 1870s, and in the centuries since, it has been extensively renovated by its current owner, Russell Jarvis.
“Nestled in a truly enchanting location atop cliffs that overlook a rugged coastline and are surrounded by temperate rainforest, Rockton provides unmatched sea views combined with privacy, elegance, and comfort,” Seb Hipwood, co-founder of Blue Book Agency, said in a press statement. “Its secluded position ensures an exceptionally peaceful and private atmosphere, complemented by stunning coastal views from expansive windows, gardens, and terraces, with the gentle sound of the sea in the background. The entire property is only visible from the air and the sea, offering a unique level of privacy for a coastal home.”

Perched above Exmoor’s wild coast, Jarvis bought the digs back in 2020 while living in Singapore. He then put the place through a massive remodel with the help of local craftsmen and builders. Most notably, the restoration included a new roof. Both Rockton and the two-bedroom Rockton Mews have separate entrances and private outlooks with sprawling sea views. According to the listing, the latter could be a rental property or combined with the principal home to function as an impressive single-family abode.
The three-bed main dwelling is reached via a stepped garden and stone terrace, which lead to the kitchen. Inside, the residence is all clean lines and open space, decked out with oak flooring, floor-to-ceiling windows, and multiple fireplaces. The kitchen itself is equipped with modern touches, including a wine fridge and a massive center island that doubles as a breakfast bar. Nearby, the dining area is decorated with natural slate flooring and a log-burning stove. Upstairs, you’ll find a sitting area that leads out to a second wrap-around terrace, plus all three bedrooms. Meanwhile, the mews house sports soaring vaulted ceilings, reclaimed wood floors, a kitchen, and a dining area.
“The interiors of Rockton are elegantly understated, featuring clean lines and a timeless ambiance,” added Hipwood. “The property boasts high-end brands and luxurious finishes throughout, including DeVol fixtures in the kitchen. The owner’s extensive and thoughtful renovation has completely refurbished Rockton to an exceptional standard, creating a truly remarkable property.”
North Devon, which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, has been a source of inspiration for romantic poets and writers alike. Throughout history, the dramatic scenery has been made famous by the author R.D. Blackmore’s Lorna Doone novel. In addition, English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge chose the rugged landscape as the setting for The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
